Training (Gym)

So slowly I’m starting to get a sense for this - but it’s not easy.

It feels like the daily diabetes juggle and then some.

Apparently a Type 1 diabetic makes 180 EXTRA decisions a day because of their health. At the moment I feel like I’m having to make another 100 on top of that.

Every gym day it’s a problem solving riddle.

  • At what time of the day am I exercising?

  • How close or far out from a meal is that?

  • How much insulin will I have on board?

  • When should I put an Ease Off on? The Yposmed/CamAPS loop only allows for UP TO 35% reduction and even then I’m putting my trust in it.

  • When should I start Personal Glucose Target?

  • What shall I set them at?

  • What am I going to be doing before or after exercise? Eg cycling for work? How will that affect things?

  • Should I have a snack?

  • What did I do two days ago that didn’t work? Like I even remember an hour ago!

It’s just a juggle and a half.

And that’s even before I worked out what’s happening for day, like all your usual ‘Normal Person’ stuff, eg where I’m meant to be, where Boy Child is meant to be, what’s for dinner, why don’t I have clean socks in my drawer - again! Etc, etc, etc.

But slowly it’s making a bit more sense.

Tonight I managed extra sets, extra weight - albeit with a hypo mid-session! I thought about calling it quits. But I refuse to let my diabetes define me. So I took a break, some Jelly Babies, and I ended on 5.9mmol.

Ssssh, don’t tell anyone I’m 15.1mmol after dinner….and a mince pie. I’m blaming the lack of basal.

Onwards and upwards!

Learnings from last post:

  • Don’t always need a snack

  • Got to find a way to cover the lost basal eg when eating straight after. It’s fine to cover the glucose rise with 1-2u, but it’s not accounting for loss of basal and food.

  • More likely to go low at later afternoon / early evening gym session

  • So far no major take backs through night - but maybe loop is accounting for this?
